My father, Jim Whitby on holiday on the Kennet & Avon canal at Newbury, Berkshire
James Francis Whitby also went by the name of Jimmie which was probably a childhood name as evidenced by an inscription in the front of "The Deerslayer" which read "With love to Jimmie from Auntie Girlie & Uncle Ted Bday 24th Dec 1911". It also appears in a letter from his father written some time before his death in 1909.2 James Francis Whitby also went by the name of Jim which was used by his wife and friends all his adult life.3 He was born on 24 December 1901 at Battersea, Surrey, England.1,4 He was baptized on 2 February 1902 at Clapham, Surrey, England.5 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 in the household of Amy Sarah Starr at Mitcham, Surrey, England.6 On 30 April 1932 James Francis Whitby lived at Weybridge, Surrey, England.7 He married Agnes Barbara Starr, daughter of Francis Joseph Starr and Agnes Prudence Livett, on 30 April 1932 at Weybridge, Surrey, England.7 James Francis Whitby witnessed East Horsley grow considerably in the period between the two World Wars. Parts of West Horsley Place Farm were sold in 1921and Manor Farm East Horsley sometime later. A number of estates were developed in the mid 1930's including Lynx Hill, the Pennymeade Estates, the Glendene Estate and the Duncombe Farm estate (N of the station), which was part of the original Horsley Towers Estate. The Manor Close Estate appears to have been largely developed by a Captain F Gray. The local shops known as Bishopsmeade Parade were developed from an application by F Chown on 7 April 1934 . Frank Chown Real Estate was still in business when I grew up in East Horsley.
Dad may have followed his cousin, Bob in deciding to build in East Horsley. An estate agents brochure at the time mentioned that season ticket rates to London cost 5.16s.6d for 3 months 3rd class. This must have been a consideration since both men travelled into the City of London every working day. in 1934 at East Horsley, Surrey, England.8 He witnessed the birth of Jill Whitby on 29 February 1936 at Woking, Surrey, England; The family were living at Little Slippers, Manor Close, East Horsley, Surrey at the time of Jill's birth.9 On 29 February 1936 James Francis Whitby was a bank clerk.10 On 27 July 1936 James Francis Whitby lived at East Horsley, Surrey, England.11 He married Phyllis Bessie Dartan-Delecolle, daughter of Reginald Leon Dartan-Delecolle and Rebecca Eva Webb, on 3 September 1936 at Banstead, Surrey, England.12 On 3 September 1938 James Francis Whitby lived at East Horsley, Surrey, England.13 On 13 August 1946 James Francis Whitby lived at East Horsley, Surrey, England.14 On 20 August 1946 James Francis Whitby was a bank clerk with Lloyds Bank, London.14,15 His telephone number was (an unknown value) in 1954 at East Horsley, Surrey, England.16 He and Phyllis Bessie Whitby emigrated on 20 December 1967 from Southampton, Hampshire, England; Sailed on the Vessel TV Fairsea four days after the wedding of their daughter, Diana.15 James Francis Whitby and Phyllis Bessie Dartan-Delecolle immigrated on 20 January 1968 to Fremantle, WA, Australia.17 James Francis Whitby was naturalized on 27 February 1987.
