The cost of the passage that the family owed to the New Zealand Government was $47-5-0 to cover the cost of 2 adults and 3 children. The eldest daughter, Marion remained behind with her maternal grandparents, the Carlisles.10,3 He and Marion Carlisle immigrated on 25 July 1874 to Otago, New Zealand. The Mairi Bhan
The maiden passage of the Mairi Bhan was completed on Sunday last, when that extremely handsome and well-appointed clipper ship was towed into port by the steamer Geelong. The latter went out for the ship in the morning, but did not return with her until noon, some delay having been caused by the exceptionally heavy sea that was running on the bar. The Customs, Immigration and Port officials boarded the ship from the steamer Jane, and were courteously received by Captain Masson and Dr M’Kenzie, the Surgeon-Superintendent, in charge of the immigrants. The way bill presented proved satisfactory in every respect, no disease of any kind having appeared during the passage, and although the proportion of children to the adults was large, only four of the little people had succumbed to King Death by the way.
The immigrants, amongst whom there are a variety of tradesmen, numbered 468 souls, and including the cabin passengers are classified as follows:- English, 11 males and 12 females; Scotch, 200 males and 180 females; Irish, 88 males and 34 females. Total, 250 males, 221 females, equal to 394 ½ statute adults. Of these, 70 were single women, 87 single men and the remainder married folks and their families, the number of children under eight years of age being roughly estimated at 100. Eighty of the immigrants were nominated. Taking this latest accession to the population of the Province through its constituent parts appeared to consist of a good class of people. The Captain, Doctor and Matron spoke well of them, they had not been troublesome, and the single girls were well-behaved. As is customary with us, we inspected the compartments, and found the single women’s to be well ventilated. The married people’s quarters were also as clean as could be expected, considering the confined space and the afarable manner in which the sleeping bunks were arranged along each side of the ship. It was close quarters with a vengeance, and very little attention had been paid to the requirements of privacy. The condition of the single men’s compartment on board the Mairi Bhan was well enough, and its occupants appeared to be hale, hearty fellows, well able to do a good day’s work. With regard to the general treatment the immigrants received on board, the single women had nothing to complain about, but the married women were otherwise, many of them expressing grave dissatisfaction at the manner in which the purser had managed the victualling department. Formal complaints were made to Mr Colin Allan about the short allowance of flour and potatoes and oatmeal, and a numerously signed petition bearing on the subject was presented to him. It was also stated that the dietary scale for the children had been departed from in several essential particulars, but this was flatly denied by the Doctor. Quite an exciting scene was enacted below whilst the immigrants were laying their grievances before the Immigration Agent, and we did not fail to notice that unusual unanimity prevailed, a chorus of voices being raised in support of the assertions made by the spokesman. The purser was the individual upon whom the opprobrium was cast, the Captain and Doctor were held blameless. There were, of course, two sides to the question, and both Captain and Doctor asserted that every care had been exercised, and that the dissatisfaction expressed had been chiefly raised and formented by the intrigues of one man, who had been troublesome from the outset of the passage. To judge of the appearance of the immigrants, we should say there was not much to complain of, excepting on one point -viz, extremely straitened cooking accommodation. In this respect, the complaints were evidently well founded, the size of the galley being utterly disproportionate to the number of people on board. That the discontent of the passengers was not universal was demonstrated by a numerously signed testimonial presented to Captain Massen. The complaints that were made are to receive proper investigation at the hands of the authorities on shore.

The Mairi Bhan is a magnificent ship, on her first voyage. She was built at Glasgow, of iron throughout, by Messrs Barclay and Curie, and is owned by Captain M’Intyre, of London, and was chartered for the present voyage by Messrs Patrick Henderson and Co. Her dimensions are - Length 230 feet; beam, 36 feet 9 inches; depth of hold, 22 feet 8 inches. She has fine ends and good bearings, and combines the characteristics of a clipper with those of a profitable cargo carrier. She is very well appointed. One of her more notable features is a beautiful windless, a Napier’s patent, one of the most compact, strong, and handy appliances of the kind we ever saw on board a merchant ship. It is worked by a messenger leading to the steam winch amidships, but can also be worked by hand in case of emergency. The crew are berthed in a commodious topgallant forecastle, perforated in the deck with two raised skylights, a feature seldom met with in ships of the Mairi Bhan’s class. The carpenter, boatswain, and other officials are berthed in a house on the main deck, whilst the officers find quarters in the poop. Considering the size of the ship the poop is rather small, but the accommodation it provides is of good quality, the saloon being elegantly fitted up, whilst the sleeping cabins are very comfortable. The Mairi Bhan is a full-rigged ship, with the usual double top-gallant yards at the fore and main. She is both taut and spuare, and spreads a great deal of canvas. Her performance during this her first trip entitle her to take rank amongst high-class clippers, for she was the ship that was at the Heads on Monday last, and thus, if that day is accepted as the date of her arrival, she made the run out in between 75 and 76 days from Glasgow. But Captain Massen assures us that he was off the port on the previous Saturday, and at noon obtained bearings of what he considered was Otago Heads. He was then nearly due south of it, and distant about twenty miles. That places the time of the run out at between 73 and 74 days from Glasgow. The ship, however did not leave the Tail of the Bank until late on the 7th May, so that thence the passage was made in between 71 and 72 days, and to the Snares in between 70 and 71 days. Reckoned to the time of her arrival in port, the passage from Glasgow occupied between 80 and 81 days. The passage was destitute of incidents. It commenced on the 5th May, and on the 7th the ship left the Tail of the Bank, and proceeded to sea at 4p.m. She took her departure from Rathlin Island next day, and thence, until she was down the Cape Clear, experienced light baffling winds. Steady easterly weather met her there, and prevailed until she picked up the N.E. trade on the 20th May, in lat.20 The trade was lost in 9 North, and light easterly winds took her to the Line, which was crossed on the 4th June, in long, 28 W. Nest day the S.E. Trade met her and held to the 12th June, 21 South. It was at once followed by the Westerlies, and the ship stood away to the southward and eastward, under press of sail, crossed the meridian of Greenwich on the 20th June, in lat.45, and the meridian of the Cape on the 23rd in lat.44. The Westerlies took a great deal of southing, seldom veering to the north of west, and were strong, and attended by severe squalls of sleet and snow. She bowled off her longitude on about the 46th parallel crossed the meridian of the Leuwin on the 9th July, and made the Snares on the 17th, and was off the Heads at midnight next day. Strong N.W. winds met her there, and by the following night she had lost ground, the Nuggets then being sighted. Next morning she fetched into the Heads with a signal for a pilot flying but as it was not responded to, and the Captain anticipating a change of wind to S.E. the ship was dept off the land, and being set away north by wind and current, did not fetch back again until Friday night, and was towed in next morning, as above related. She brings about 1400 tons of cargo and is consigned to Messrs Cargills, Gibbs and Co.11 William Thomson died on 8 October 1877 at Canterbury, New Zealand, at age 35.12
